David Simon with McNulty aka Dominic West

David Simon gave complacent TV viewers reason to sit up and focus with his gripping dramas The Wire, Generation Kill and Treme. I may have had to rewind and re-watch episodes of The Wire with subtitles on to understand just what was going on, but the brilliance of Simon’s writing was easy to see from the get go.

A few days ago, Simon was a recipient of the prestigious MacArthur ‘genius’ grant and awarded half a million dollars. The grant is awarded annually to Americans who ‘show exceptional merit and promise for continued and enhanced creative work.’ Simon is definitely guilty of this and humble too.

Here is the link to a video of an insightful interview he did at the Edinburgh International Television Festival. I loved what he said about his motivations for writing and how he feels television is finally being honoured, no longer just a medium for advertising. Amen to that.
